A is for Anthropocene Reviewed

Welcome to Day 1 of the A-Z challenge. This year I am reviewing my favorite podcasts from A to Z, and Anthropocene Reviewed is a fun way to begin.

Don't let the crazy title scare you away. This is a wonderful podcast!

What on earth is Anthropocene?

We live in the Cenozoic era, which can be subdivided into different epochs. Until recently, a scientist would have told you that we live in the Holocene epoch, which means "entirely recent" and began after the last ice age.

In the 21st century there has been a debate about whether we have entered a new epoch, the Anthropocene. Some scientists would argue that the debate is not so much whether we have entered it as when we entered it. Anthropocene means "man/new" or the time when the existence of humankind began changing the planet.

John Green says this podcast is a place where he will review "facets of the human-centered planet on a 5-star scale." In his first episode, he rates Canada Geese and Diet Dr. Pepper with his trademark dry humor. Episode 2 takes a darker turn as he explains the human impact on cholera.

Category: According to iTunes this fits under Society and Culture. I would have categorized it as Science.

What's My Time Commitment Here?

Anthropocene Reviewed only started airing in late February 2018, but so far he appears to be downloading content about once every two weeks.  Each episode lasts about 20 minutes.

My Review

John Green's take on his topics is both delightful and solidly researched.

There are a few podcasts that I bump right to the top of my list whenever I see that there is a new episode, and this is one of them. I love that it doesn't get updated constantly, and I love that the episodes are about 20 minutes long. To me that is a perfect length of time for a podcast.

I give Anthropocene Reviewed 5 stars. You can listen to it here, or where ever you listen to your podcasts.

  4. This is a terrific theme. I'm always on the lookout for good podcasts—and by "on the lookout," I mean I wait for people to tell me something is worthwhile, lol—because I have a 30-minute drive to work and would rather choose what I'm listening to than be a victim of what the radio stations think is interesting. I'm looking forward to your recommendations!
