What's Up Wednesday! June 11, 2014

What's Up Wednesday is a weekly blog hop created by Jaime Morrow  and Erin Funk, to help connect writers on this writing journey.  If you want to join the fun, you can sign up here.

WHAT I'M READING

I had such high hopes for Fangirl. I know most of you loved it, but I ended up skimming the last hundred and fifty pages because I cared enough to find out what happened, but not enough to read every word. I was disappointed, but it worked out because I didn't have a lot of time for reading this week. I'm just starting The Fifth Wave, and I'm hoping to take it slow.

WHAT I'M WRITING

Pyromancy Part 1 went to the first batch of beta readers late last night. !!!!! My goal for RSW was to edit a little every day, and so far so good. I went through the first third of Pyromancy Part 2 and reverse outlined. There are several threads that my cowriters and I let slide, and so I started a running list of things we need to add. I also found 2 chapters that were in the manuscript twice for some reason, which is awesome because painless deletion of words is always a good time. :)

WHAT INSPIRES ME RIGHT NOW

Ready, Set, WRITE! I knew I had to get some writing done this summer, but the how and when was lost in a great, big ball of panic. I am typically quite unproductive in the summertime, but there are so many deadlines! So writing weekly goals and having a support group is exactly what I need. Besides, I'm slowly starting to recognize this group of people and their writing projects are starting to seem familiar. Doing things with friends is always more fun.

WHAT ELSE I'VE BEEN UP TO

Someone at school and someone at church got together and said "Let's experiment with how many things we can add to the Crouse's schedule before Melanie cracks." So there's that. Then add 3 weeks with 2 of my children in driver's ed into the mix, and you'll have some idea of my life. Sometimes, I turn on netflix just to turn off the sound of my brain constantly repeating my to-do list.

  1. I hope the 5th wave is a pick me up after Fangirl.

  2. THE 5TH WAVE is a great read! Sorry to hear you were disappointed in FANGIRL, though. I signed up to READY. SET. WRITE, too, even though I'm a bit late. It's such a great motivator to set goals like this! :)

  3. Congrats on getting your MS out to your Betas! *tosses confetti*

And I fully support your Netflix binge plan. Sometimes you just need to disconnect. You also are allowed to say "no" when people try to pile more on your plate than you can handle.

Hope you have an amazing week. :)

  4. I wish I was there with you on getting some writing done this summer. We're moving. Twice. I'm in maintenance mode--if you know what I mean. (Which includes a cover reveal, blogging, and hopefully SOME writing along the way.)

  5. I'm thrilled that RSW is working out so well for you so far. I'm having much the same experience. After slacking hardcore on writing over the past several months, it's great to have the accountability and encouragement to keep me on track. I really have to agree with you that painless deletion of words is awesome. I kind of get addicted to the delete key and trimming the unnecessary stuff during edits. Have a great week! :D

  6. Good luck with editing, writing, and drivers' ed! I remember taking that very well. Sometimes a Netflix binge is exactly what's needed.

  7. I haven't read FANGIRL yet, but I always worry I'll be disappointed when there's so much hype surrounding a book. So glad your goal to edit a bit every day is going well, and I hope you and your co-writers get lots of great feedback on the first book in your series. Have a great week and hang in there with all the busyness! :)

  10. I know that feeling of being overwhelmed with STUFF. And it seems to pile on all at one time, too. I hope you have a chance to relax a little this summer!

  11. I really liked FANGIRL, but I loved ELEANOR & PARK and THE ATTACHMENTS much better.
I'm like you- pretty unproductive during the summer. Let's wish each other luck!

  12. I'm glad someone else didn't love Fangirl. It was okay, but I didn't think it was over the top awesome. I still prefer Eleanor & Park.
Congrats on sending off the book to betas! Big moment.
Good luck with all the busy. I love Netflix for that same reason.

  13. I haven't read either of those books. I'm getting way behind in my YA reading.

And I have to say that I'm relieved to discover that I'm not the only person who is suffering from let's-see-how-many-thing-we-can-add-to-her-schedule-before-she-cracks. I'd thought that I'd be able to catch my breath this summer. Instead it's worse... But at least I'm not alone. :)

Holy moly, 2 kids learning to drive at once! Oh boy...
