What's Up Wednesday

What's Up Wednesday

What's Up Wednesday is a blog hop created by Jaime Morrow and Erin Funk as a way for writers to connect with other writers. You can join by using the link on their website.

What I've Been Reading

I am almost finished with Darkness Watching by our own Emma L. Adams. I'm enjoying it very much, and think it will be the first of many books I read by her. When I finish, I plan to start This Shattered World. Yay!

What I've Been Writing

I wrote the first page of my new book, Lost Magic. It wasn't much, but it was a start.

What Works For Me

I don't know if this works for me, actually, but I'm about to try the Turtle Method of writing. I just made that up, by the way. But the Turtle Method is where I try to do something every single day to get this book written. Even if it's only a page, or half an hour of writing, I need to get going if I'm ever going to build momentum. I'm buying myself some stickers today so I can add them to my calendar.

What Else Is New

Last week I raved about how nice it was to finally get to watch some TV, after months without a break. Well, I've never been known for my moderation, and I kind of went off the deep end with Gilmore Girls this week--hence the only getting one page written. I think I'm ready to get back into the real world though. Cross your fingers for me.

**After reading Jaime's plea that we all try to comment, I decided to mention something. I've got a problem. It's probably something with an easy fix, but I haven't figured it out yet. I was just trying to comment on Katy Upperman's blog, and somehow, my comment vanished into the ether, the way it does almost every week. Her blog is not the only one I have that problem with. It seems like it's the same ones again and again. Always wordpress blogs, but not all wordpress blogs. I've always wondered if the comments were getting screened first, and if they appear after a few hours, but I don't think that's the case.  I'm mentioning this here and now, because of Jaime's plea that we take the time to comment on blogs. I try hard to comment on as many as I can every week, and I feel really badly that there are some WUW bloggers who have no idea how much I enjoy their blogs. I've always wondered how I could let them know, so if anyone knows what I'm doing wrong, I would love to know. Does anyone else have this problem?**

  1. GAh, I want to start the Gilmore Girls soon, but's such a time commitment. Soon...soon... Thanks for sharing. :D

  2. Hey, it's one page more than you had before, so well done you! :)

I've had similar problems with wordpress before; plenty of times I've commented on a wordpress blog and my comment just disappears. It's really frustrating!

Best of luck with your new writing method. :D Hannah Kent wrote her amazing debut novel Burial Rites by making herself write 1,000 words a day for 100 days, and it certainly worked for her!

  3. Good luck with the turtle method and your writing. One more page is one than you had before! Good luck with the rest of the week, Mel!

  4. I've had that problem with Wordpress, too. I found changing browsers and fiddling with my pop up blocker settings fixed it.

Stickers are such a great motivational tool. Mine work wonders. Good luck :D

  5. Wow, so glad to hear you're enjoying DW! ^_^

I've never heard of the Turtle Method, but working on something writing-related every day sounds like a great plan. Have an awesome week! :)

  6. That's totally poopy about the ether stealing your comments. Boo, ether. :-( It's irritating how Blogger and WordPress aren't super compatible. I use Chrome as my browser and haven't had too many problems. But, man, Blogger is glitchy WAY too often.

I like this Turtle Method you speak of. I think anything that helps build momentum is great! (Speaking as someone who has had the worst time building up momentum. Bleh.) Hope you have a wonderful week, Melanie! :D

  7. When I used to post from work using IE and the version my work approved, there were some blogs I couldn't post on at all. I'd pull up the same blog on my laptop using the latest Chrome browser, and the comments worked. So possibly your browser and the version you're using? May help to try on another computer if possible.

Also, I have also been sucked into Gilmore Girls. I watched the series for the first time only a few years ago. Then immediately rewatched! Forever Young Adult has fantastic recaps on their site.

  8. Melanie! I'm so glad you mentioned your problem with Wordpress comments! In the case of my blog, it's totally my fault that your comments were disappearing. They were going into my spam comment folder for some reason, and I never check the spam folder because it really is almost always spam. I fixed the problem and your comments have magically reappeared. :-) So sorry about that. Thanks for reminding me to check comments folders periodically. Anyway... Way to go on writing your first page. I feel like starting is half the battle, and after that first page things usually start to come a ~little~ easier. Hope you have a wonderful week!

  9. I get sucked into Friends marathons all the time! One page is better than nothing, and I like your turtle method. Might have to give it a try.

  10. I've always meant to watch Gilmore Girls- one of these days I will watch it from start to finish.
I just had that same problem today- I commented on Miss Cole's blog and the comment disappeared. That was on my phone though, so when I went back and commented on the computer, it came up. Don't know what happened in the first place. :)

  13. Turtle method sounds like something I can get behind. ;) Also, the first page is nothing to scoff at. Beginnings are so hard for me, so go you!

Re: The Young Elites - you know, I'm still not totally in love with the narrative voice, but I think it does get better a few chapters in. The beginning is definitely a little rocky. I actually never finished the Legend trilogy (but I will)!

  14. I'm all for the turtle method. It leads to eventually producing 2000+ words a day if I'm consistent. Anyhoo...

I have had issues with commenting, but most blogs will post a message "This comment is waiting moderation" or "This comment will be saved." Of course, sometimes the interwebs eats the comments anyway. *sigh*

  15. I am so glad you have your blog so I can keep up with you. I am not on Facebook anymore so this really makes me happy. A few months ago I went through my Gilmore Girls binge. I love that show.
